FAQ

Who would apply to LKA?

Parents of struggling readers entering grades one - four, who suspect that their child may be dyslexic and who are Louisiana residents should apply.

What is dyslexia?

Louisiana law states that dyslexia is defined as "an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to become a much better reader most commonly due to a difficulty in phonological processing which affects the ability of an individual to speak, read, and spell. Phonological processing means the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken and written language." - Act 206

Does it cost anything to attend LKA?

No! LKA is a tuition free charter school.

Does LKA offer transportation?

LKA serves many parishes so bussing isn't provided and we recommend carpooling with others when feasible.

What if my child is autistic?

Dyslexia is a distinct entity and is defined an unexpected difficulty with reading for one who has the intelligence to be a better reader. Autism is a separate entity and a child cannot have both autism and dyslexia.

Admissions

The admissions process is a multistep process that begins with a screening of all application materials.

The Admissions Team assesses if the student is at risk for dyslexia and if so, the student will be tested to verify dyslexia.

If the applicant is found to be dyslexic by the admissions team, then the student is accepted into LKA or placed on a waitlist for when a spot becomes available at LKA.

About Before and After Care

  • How do I pay for the Extended Care Progam?

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.
  • What happens if I don't pay on time?

In order to provide a quality program for our families, especially considering all the added safety precautions this year, it’s crucial that all extended day balances are paid in a timely manner. Failure to comply with payment

schedule will result in your child’s immediate dismissal from the program until payment is rendered.

  • Do you offer Financial Assistance or Payment Arrangements?

Please contact LKA at the time of registration to ask about Financial assistance.

Arrangements must be agreed upon before the start of the program.

  • Can I pay-per-day instead of for the whole month?

There are no daily attendance or drop in options for extended day this year. All attendees must be registered and on the monthly billing cycle. There is no pay-by-day option this year.

  • What is the drop off and pickup procedure?

Parents will not be allowed to enter the front office but will be able to communicate via our intercom system if needed. The Procare Connect (formerly Kinderlime) app will allow for curbside GPS Sign In/Out once you have arrived at school. You must download the app for this option. Otherwise, you will need to use the intercom and the front desk will sign your child in or out.

Please contact the office either by phone (225) 298-1223, written note, or fax (225) 384-5485 if your child is to be picked up by someone other than the specified persons noted in Procare.

  • What is the disciplinary policy for the Extended Care Program?

Participants in the LKA Extended Day Program shall adhere to the discipline policy set forth in the Louisiana Key Academy Student &

Parent Handbook. Any infraction of existing policy will result in appropriate disciplinary action. Parents will be notified of any student incidents that occur during the extended day program. Any incidents violating school rules will be investigated by the school disciplinarian the following school day, and the disciplinarian will follow up with parents on consequences.

  • Is food provided as part of the program?

Before Care: No food is provided by the school, however, students can bring breakfast items. No candy or carbonated beverages are allowed.

Aftercare: Yes, a snack is provided as part of aftercare program. Students may also bring their own snack. No juice will be offered this year. Students can bring their own water. Please note water fountains may not be available due to COVID-19 safety guidelines.
