Our Curriculum

We don’t just teach.  We create opportunities for students to absorb new concepts through multiple modalities and interdisciplinary learning.

Core Academic Classes

Louisiana Key Academy curriculum content and delivery is designed and implemented based on recommendations of the National Reading Panel and in accordance with 21st century science. Instruction focuses on remediating the dyslexic student’s weaknesses in decoding and fluency and fortifying student’s strengths in critical thinking and problem solving. LKA academics utilizes all opportunities intentionally building interdisciplinary learning for students in order to build repetition and feedback, avoiding teaching major concepts or skills in isolation.

Core Academic Classes include structured language arts, written composition, math, science, and social studies. Enrichment classes include Physical Education, Art, and Drama and STEM.

Structured Language Arts

  • Provided in small groups
  • Taught by a CALT
  • Begins with sequential, explicit instruction in building foundational skills in phonemic awareness and decoding combined with intentional building of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Structured Language Arts and written composition are two courses taught by a trained Certified Academic Language Therapist and connect explicit teaching of speaking, reading and writing skills through oral language, decoding instruction, written composition instruction, and building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through reading aloud connected text, with feedback, while building background knowledge through experiences (videos, trips, hands on projects, etc) to help the words on the page come alive.

Students in grades one through five engage in a 6:1 student to teacher ratio with a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) or CALT Practitioner. Students in grades six through eight engage in an 8:1 student to teacher ratio with a CALT or CALT Practitioner to study and read grade level literature and language composition.

Math

Math instruction is focused on building an understanding of important mathematical concepts through a hands-on big picture approach. The use of conceptual understanding helps build student’s grade level math skills focusing on foundational concepts that connect students to skills from one grade level to the next. Math teachers are training in dyslexia and language and delivery is conducted in smaller group settings. You might find our students learning about fractions in the math kitchen or building numeracy skills through.

Science & Social Studies

Content teaching at LKA allows students to explore grade level content through discovery learning, problem solving, and hands-on creation. Students engage with the content and concepts while building oral language, intentional tier 2 vocabulary and writing skills.

Art

Students at LKA learn to create works of art that celebrate their strengths and build historical knowledge of famous and local artists. Students study new artists at each grade level. They learn about when the artists lived, famous works of art, and art techniques in the style of each artist. Students then create an original work using their new skills. We are proud to celebrate a diverse body of famous and local artists at LKA and proud of our student's many strengths.
